Lughnasadh – The First Harvest of the Soul

Lughnasadh is the first of the harvest festivals. It stands midway between the Summer Solstice and the Autumn Equinox and marks the gentle beginning of Autumn—not according to the weather, but according to the living wisdom of the natural world.
The Celtic peoples understood something we have largely forgotten. Nature is always preparing what comes next.
There is no abrupt ending. Only relationship. Only rhythm. Only a continuous movement from one season into another.
When we learn to walk with that rhythm, life begins to make more sense.
The First Harvest
When we hear the word harvest, most of us think of abundance. Fields. Fruit. Vegetables. The visible results of months of care. But Lughnasadh invites us into another kind of harvest.
The first harvest of the soul.
It asks us to pause and ask:
What has this season given me?
What have I learned?
How have I changed?
What has life been teaching me?
Sometimes the answer is found in the things that flourished.
Sometimes it is found in the things that didn’t.
Some of my greatest harvests have not been the moments when everything worked exactly as I hoped. They have come through disappointment. Unexpected endings. Difficult conversations.
Plans that changed direction. Questions that took months to answer.
Looking back, I can see that nothing was wasted. Everything became wisdom. That is the true harvest.
The Forgotten Art of Completion
How to complete. We are very good at beginning. We celebrate new ideas.
New projects. New relationships. New dreams.
Walking into Autumn
This is why I love the Celtic understanding of Autumn. It is not a season of decline. It is a season of understanding. A season of relationship with our emotions. A season of recognising what nourishes life and what no longer does.
“Many people notice a quieter energy at this time of year. A longing to slow down. A touch of melancholy. A need to reflect. I believe this is not something to fear. It is part of the wisdom of the season.
– Gita
When Autumn is lived consciously, Winter becomes a season of deep dreaming rather than heaviness. Only when we have completed one cycle can we truly imagine the next.
Walking the Whole Cycle
One of the greatest gifts the seasons have given me is perspective.
There have been many moments when I thought something had gone wrong.
Looking back, I can now see that I was simply in a different season. Growth was happening. Just not in the way I expected. This is why I believe understanding one season is helpful. Walking the whole cycle is transformational. Each season prepares us for the next. Each season gives meaning to the one before and the one after. Without the whole cycle we only ever see part of the full picture.
And as we walk through the seasons, something beautiful happens. We begin to understand ourselves. We notice where we naturally flourish. Which seasons challenge us. What patterns return. How intuition speaks to us. How we move through change. Little by little, self-knowledge becomes self-leadership. Life no longer feels like something happening to us.
We begin to participate.
A Beautiful Reminder
Recently, one of the women walking this journey shared something that deeply touched me.
“This Saturday, I went to a ceremony and journeyed in a completely different way, thanks to what I have learned in the program. It was completely different. Simply through what I had already learned from shamanic journeying and the tools I had received; I visited another universe. I felt so much gratitude for this experience. It brought me so many answers and carried me throughout the entire day.”
Not dependence. Not collecting more information. But becoming someone who knows how to walk with life.
An Invitation
Every Fire Festival offers us a doorway into the Wheel of the Year.
Imbolc awakens.
Beltane brings us into becoming.
Lughnasadh teaches us to harvest and complete.
Samhain invites us into dreaming and renewal.
Each is a beginning. Each offers a different doorway into the same living cycle.
If something in these words speaks to a place you have always known but perhaps never fully trusted… Perhaps this is your season.
Each year I welcome a new circle of women to begin walking the Wheel together through Wisdom of the Seasons.
Not simply to learn about nature.
But to discover themselves through it.
Bring your life exactly as it is.
Bring your questions.
Bring your experience.
Bring your longing.
The journey begins there.
And I would be honoured to walk the coming year beside you.
Connect to your community
The path towards inner wisdom and discovery of ourselves is a path which, ultimately, we have to journey on our own. Knowing who you are and what gift you carry is revealed in this path of discovery of the Self. It brings sovereignty and autonomy.
Community is the way we nourish ourselves on this journey. We find safety in the sacred circle with others and inspiration when we listen to their own discoveries.
